Concept Art Shows Mel Gibson As Wolverine
While it's now hard for us to imagine any other actor playing Wolverine than Hugh Jackman, it was not always thus.
A fair few actors found themselves in the mix for the part in the past.
[The stars who turned down Oscar-winning roles]
Added to that number is Mel Gibson, who in 1997 was also thought to be in the frame.
Why the controversial star never became Logan is not known for sure – but it's thought that Fox deemed Gibson too expensive.
Just a couple of years after 'Braveheart', he was likely to have been at the crest of his earning power in Hollywood, so it's certainly plausible.
But he must have been being mulled for a time, as conceptual art has now emerged, film tweeter Will McCrabb dropping this beauty.
[Has Hollywood forgiven Mel Gibson?]
It's purported to be by Miles Teves, the Hollywood artist who provided visionary work for films like 'Total Recall', 'RoboCop', 'The Chronicles of Riddick' and 'Legend'.
Mel certainly joins an illustrious group of former potential Logans.
At various points from the 90s onward rocker Glenn Danzig, Russell Crowe, Ed Norton, Keanu Reeves and even the late, great Bob Hoskins were all considered.
Dougray Scott was actually cast in the role for Bryan Singer's 'X-Men' movies, but when 'Mission: Impossible II' overran, he had to walk away – with Jackman taking up the role instead.
Can you see Mel as Wolverine? He certainly suits the sideburns...
