Dad's Army film planned

Yahoo UK Movies News
A 'Dad's Army' film is in the pipeline, according to reports.

But more controversial than bringing the classic sitcom to the screen is a possible rearrangement of the casting to make Captain Mainwaring a woman.

One of the show's writers Jimmy Perry revealed the news to the show's official fan club, the Dad's Army Appreciation Society (DAAS).

89-year-old Perry, who wrote the show with 'Hi-de-Hi!' and 'Are You Being Served' legend David Croft, is said to be 'in the midst of discussions' about the project.

But the show, which ran until 1977 over 80 episodes, has now lost most of its original cast, with Clive Dunn being the most recent fallen member of Captain Mainwaring's Home Guard volunteers, dying aged 92 last week.

But with a new cast comes scepticism from fans, particularly with talk of Arthur Lowe's character Mainwaring being cast as female.

According to the Independent, the news of a film version of the show was met with 'groans from his audience' when Perry announced it to the DAAS.

Meanwhile, Corinne Fulford, the manager of the Dad's Army Museum in Thetford, Norfolk, where the series was made, said: “We’re talking about an iconic series that was written by two geniuses. I can’t even imagine how [Mainwaring] could played by a woman.”

Women were allowed in the home guard from 1943, but it was unlikely they'd have risen to the rank of captain.

It's not a new idea to turn the series into a film, however. It was made into a feature-length movie in 1971 starring all the original cast, including Lowe, John Le Mesurier, Clive Dunn and Ian Lavender.
