Daniel Radcliffe sobs as Richard Griffiths is laid to rest

Harry Potter co-star among a wealth of famous faces saying a last goodbye to the actor

Daniel Radcliffe broke down 'several times' during the funeral of actor Richard Griffiths yesterday.

The 23-year-old Harry Potter star was openly distressed throughout the ceremony, which took place at the holy Trinity Church in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the burial place of William Shakespeare.

“Daniel was clearly very fond of Richard, as anyone who ever met him was, and was crying quite openly in church,” said one mourner.

“It was a beautiful service and Richard would have been touched by how many people turned up to say goodbye.”

Radcliffe, who starred alongside Griffiths in the 'Harry Potter' films – in which Griffiths played Harry's uncle Vernon Dursley – paid tribute to the actor saying that he made any room 'twice as funny'.

He was among a wealth of famous names in attendance, including 'Downton Abbey' writer Julian Fellowes, Nigel Havers, director Bruce Robinson, David Bradley, John Nettles and Jack Whitehall, who was Griffiths' godson.

Actress Penelope Wilton read his favourite poem, Edward Lear's 'The Owl and the Pussycat', while former Bond girl Carmen Du Sautoy read from Ecclesiastes, while tenor Graham Neal sang 'Danny Boy'.

Meanwhile, floral tributes came from the likes of Dame Judi Dench and Richard E. Grant, his 'Withnail & I' co-star, who wrote: “To my beloved Uncle Monty, chin chin, all my love Richard E. Grant.”

The 65-year-old actor, star of countless movies but most famous for his roles in 'Withnail & I', the TV series 'Pie in the Sky' and the stage version of 'The History Boys', died on March 28 following complications during heart surgery.
