Dinah Sheridan dies at 92

Dinah Sheridan, star of 'The Railway Children', has died aged 92.

Her agent confirmed that she passed away peacefully at her home in Northwood, Middlesex, surrounded by her family on Sunday (November 25).

Sheridan also starred in films such as 'Genevieve' and 'The Mirror Crack'd', as well as a number of popular TV shows through the 60s, 70s and 80s.

She appeared as the 'time lady' Chancellor Flavia in the 20th anniversary 'Doctor Who' special 'The Five Doctors' in 1983, and as Angela Latimer in the BBC sitcom 'Don't Wait Up' alongside Tony Britton and Nigel Havers.

She was born Dinah Nadyejda Ginsburg in 1920 in Hampstead, north London, to a Russian father and German mother.

She reportedly chose her stage name Sheridan from the phone book, and made her film debut in the 1937 comedy 'Father Steps Out'.

Sheridan married actor Jimmy Hanley and was mother to Tory MP and former Conservative Party chairman Sir Jeremy Hanley and actress Jenny Hanley, a former presenter of children's show 'Magpie'.

She was perhaps best known for her role as Mrs Waterbury, the mother in the 1970 classic 'The Railway Children', and as Wendy McKim in the 1953 family comedy 'Genevieve'.
