Duncan Jones is signed up to direct the anticipated movie based on the online fantasy game 'World of Warcraft'.

The director of 'Moon' and 'Source Code', and also the son of David Bowie, picks up the project after 'Evil Dead' legend Sam Raimi dropped out last summer to take on 'Oz: The Great and Powerful'.

Tweeting some trepidation at the prospect of turning a video game into a decent movie, he said: “So the gauntlet was thrown down ages ago: Can you make a proper MOVIE of a video game. Ive always said its possible. Got to DO it now! ;)”

Warner Bros. has reportedly set a 2015 release, meaning that it will join a sturdy line-up of blockbusters coming out that year, including 'Star Wars VII', 'The Avengers 2', 'The Justice League' and 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'.

The script is being penned by Charles Leavitt, who wrote the Leonardo DiCarprio-starring 'Blood Diamond', after taking over the project from 'Saving Private Ryan' scribe Robert Rodat.

It will be the first large-scale blockbuster that Jones has taken on, with a budget thought to be over $100 million (£63 million) in place.

His previous films 'Moon' and 'Source Code' cost $5 million (£3.1 million) and $32 million (£20.2 million).
