In the reboot, which is thought to be called simply 'Vacation', Helms would play a grown-up Rusty taking his own family off on their own madcap holiday.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, who wrote all-star comedy 'Horrible Bosses', will be sat in director's chairs.

The original 1983 film was directed by Harold Ramis and written by the legendary John Hughes, who based it on his own family holidays as a child.

Starring Chevy Chase as harassed dad Clark – who we've recently seen back on screen in sitcom 'Community' – the consequent films delivered with diminishing returns, through the 'European Vacation', 'Christmas Vacation' and 'Vegas Vacation'.

If he signs, it would make Helms a very busy man indeed. He is currently filming a new series of the US version of 'The Office', having taken over from Steve Carrell, and will begin shooting 'The Hangover III' in September.
