Great Gatsby release moved to 2013

Baz Luhrmann's 3D take on the American classic will now be released next summer

Baz Luhrmann's 3D film adaptation of 'The Great Gatsby' is having its release date delayed until 2013.

It was previously slated for a release on Christmas Day 2012, but will now shift into the summer next year instead.

Producer Warner Bros says that the reason to shift it is to make it a summer movie able to reach a bigger audience. This could also secure bigger receipts for the film.

“Baz is known for being innovative, but with this film he has done something completely unexpected - making it in 3D - while capturing the emotion, the intimacy, the power and the spectacle of the time,” said Veronika Kwan Vandenberg of Warner Bros.

“The responses we’ve had to some of the early sneak peeks have been phenomenal, and we think ‘The Great Gatsby’ will be the perfect summer movie around the world.”

“We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible,” added president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman.

A shift in schedule could also help the film avoid a glut of other high-profile releases at the end of the year, including 'The King's Speech' director Tom Hooper's interpretation of 'Les Miserables', Quentin Tarantino's 'Django Unchained' and Peter Jackson's 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey'.

But a later release will also rule it out of the Oscar race for 2013, meaning it will be up for the 2014 awards instead.

The ensemble cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, alongside Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Isla Fisher and Joel Edgerton.
