How much are famous movie houses worth?

Last week the Chicago house used in ‘Home Alone’ was sold for $1.58 million (£1 million).

Couple John and Cynthia Abendshien had owned the red-brick colonial-style building since the 1980s, and had been looking for more than $2.4 million (£1.6 million) for the property.

However, they were forced to sell for the much lower price despite the home’s rich history.

Back in 1989 when ‘Home Alone’ was being filmed, the couple camped in the bedroom while the rest of the enormous 4,250 sq ft house was used by the production team.

Much of the property was trashed (onscreen at least) by Macaulay Culkin as he fought off Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern’s robbers.

It seems that being used in a famous movie does not make a property immune from the house price crash. Indeed all the recent examples we could find sold for less than their asking price, although there were still some whopping valuations.

A property in Salt Lake City based on the iconic house in Pixar’s ‘Up’ – which even had the same kitchen fittings – was sold for a relatively modest $400,000 (£256,000) - lower than many other homes in the area.

The building used as Dr Tyrell’s mansion in ‘Blade Runner’ – the stunning Mayan-inspired Ennis House in Los Angeles - was expected to fetch $15 million (£9.1 million) in 2009 but eventually sold for just $4.5 million (£2.8 million) in 2011.

Similarly the amazing California mansion El Fureidis, which was used for the exterior shots of Tony Montana’s gauche pad in ‘Scarface’, was on the market for $35 million (£22 million) at one point, before Russian banker Sergey Grishin eventually bought it for less than half that price.

But at least they sold. As far as we know, 370 Beech Street in Highland Park, Illinois, which was used for Cameron’s home in ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’, is still on the market.

It’s up for $1.6 million (£1 million), but estate agent Meladee Hughes told Yahoo! back in January that a lack of bathrooms or modern kitchen has been putting people off.

And apparently the stunning sci-fi-style Elrod House, which was used as the abode of  Willard Whyte in ‘Diamonds are Forever’, is available for just $13.9 million (£8.8 million) It’s been on the market for two years.
