Charlie Hunnam has said he's not at all nervous about the prospect of starring in Sam Taylor-Johnson's upcoming adaptation of EL James' racy novel, Fifty Shades of Grey.

The actor, who will play billionaire fetishist Christian Grey, added that his "tangible chemistry" with co-star Dakota Johnson convinced him to take the part, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "It felt kind of exciting and fun and weird and compelling, and so that was it."

As for bringing the saucy material to life, Hunnam looked back to his first TV role playing 15-year-old Nathan in Russell T. Davies' 90 drama Queer as Folk.

"My first job was on a Channel 4 miniseries called Queer as Folk. It was incredibly explicit sexual scenes with a man," he said. "I mean I'm 16 and 17 years wiser now. So if I could do it when I was 18 with a guy, I can certainly do it at 33 with a lady."

Hunnam also revealed that he spoke at length with Taylor-Johnson before signing up, saying that after their first meeting he "felt really intrigued and excited about it."

"I went and read the first book to get a clearer idea of who this character was, and felt even more excited about the prospect of bringing him to life."

Fifty Shades of Grey will hit cinemas on 1 August, 2014.
