Is Johnny Depp’s film career also in trouble?

Warner Bros. stall on newly single star’s latest film after 'Dark Shadows' tanks

It’s been a bad year for Johnny Depp. First ‘Dark Shadows’ bombed at the box office, then he split with Vanessa Paradis, his partner of 14 years.

Now another one of his upcoming projects has been hit by money problems, with Warner Bros. apparently pushing back on 'The Thin Man'.

It’s a remake of the 1934 detective classic, which starred William Powell and Myrna Loy. Rob Marshall (‘Chicago’) was set to direct.

Deadline report that the £64 million budget for the film was submitted before the disastrous release of 'Dark Shadows', another period remake with limited mainstream appeal, and now the studio has halted pre-production on the film.

Depp’s other future movie is ‘The Lone Ranger’, which was also briefly shut down by nervy Disney Executives because of the £160 million price tag. Only last week it was revealed the budget had ballooned again, against Disney’s wishes.

Until recently the actor was considered virtually a sure thing at the box office thanks to the success of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ films and his many, many Tim Burton collaborations. But his run of hits shuddered to a halt with the disastrous ‘The Rum Diary’ in 2011, which lost around £15 million.

With all the focus on his private life at the moment, could it be his professional career that is in real trouble? Is Johnny Depp no longer the box office draw he once was?
