Keaton and Burton's third Batman was to be origin story

Pair wanted to get back to the beginning for their planned third installment

Michael Keaton and Tim Burton's planned third Batman film was to be an origin story, Keaton has revealed.

The actor and the director of 'Batman' in 1989 and 'Batman Returns' in 1992 wanted to go the route of Frank Miller's classic Batman comic-book 'Batman: Year One'.

But instead Warner Bros. decided to go for a more family-orientated interpretation of the Batman story, and the plans collapsed.

“You look at where [Christopher Nolan] went, which is exactly what I wanted to do when I was having meetings about the third one,” Keaton told the WTF podcast.

“I said you want to see how this guy started. This could be brilliant. [Warner Bros] didn't want to do it, so I didn't want to do it.”

Various things happened after that. In 2000, the studio backtracked and hired Darren Aronofsky to make a film version of Miller's book, but that project faltered, as did the following project, the planned 'Batman Vs Superman'.

Nolan then took over the franchise in 2005 with 'Batman Begins'.
