Co-star Christina Applegate, who plays co-anchor Veronica Corningstone, also tweeted: “So excited Kristen Wiig has joined our cast for Anchorman 2. Going 2 b best movie ever made. Besides the best movies ever made.”

It's thought that Wiig, the star of 'Bridesmaids', will play either the wife or romantic interest for Steve Carell's character, the dim but lovable weatherman Brick Tamland.

She joins the cast, which includes Paul Rudd and Dave Koechner reprising their roles of Brian Fantana and Champ Kind, and Will Ferrell, as the inimitable Ron Burgundy.

It now has a release date too, due to arrive in cinemas on December 20.

The plot is likely to revolve around the advent of rolling news, and how the new schedules affect the team at San Diego's Channel 4 News.

Director McKay has also talked about adding extended musical numbers into the film.
