New Godzilla poster shows epic scale of the monster

Looks like we're a long way from Roland Emmerich's campfest.

So far, we’ve only seen snippets of the titular beast of Legendary's ‘Godzilla’ reboot.

A hint of tail, a head glimpsed through fog, a hulking mass stalking through a cityscape, but now, with this new poster, we finally get a true sense of the scale of Godzilla himself.

And he’s blooming MASSIVE.

The giant fiend is seen in silhouette laying waste to the streets of San Francisco, dwarfing the city’s tallest building, the pointy Transamerica Pyramid which is 260m high.

The early Japanese iterations of Godzilla had the giant lizard pegged at somewhere between 50-100 metres tall, but if the scale of this poster is accurate to the film, we’re estimating that the monster of Gareth Edwards’ vision is around the 400m tall  mark.

That’s even bigger than the Kaiju which terrorized earth in Guillermo Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’, which would explain the levels of destruction and terror on show on the first trailer which debuted last year.

But of course, it could just be the marketeers using a bit of creative license to emphasize the epic scale of the film, and we’re reading too much into it – but what can we say? We’re excited about this one!

Either way, judging from what we’ve seen of the film so far, it looks like the filmmakers are going for something much more terrifying than Roland Emmerich's campy 1998 effort.

Edwards, the director behind cult indie sci-fi hit ‘Monsters’, says his monster will be "a force of nature, like the wrath of God or vengeance for the way we've behaved”.

Already sounds scarier than Matthew Broderick playing the action hero.

‘Godzilla’, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Bryan Cranston is coming to cinemas May 16.
