Simon Pegg accused of lying over Star Trek backtrack

Scotty could be in a spot of bother.

Called out... was Pegg 'doorstepped', journalist claims not (Copyright: Paramount)

Simon Pegg appears to have learned that you diss the Trekker community at your peril.

Pegg, who plays Scotty in the JJ Abrams 'Star Trek' movies, was quoted as saying 'f**k you' to the fans at a Las Vegas conference who branded 'Star Trek Into Darkness' the worst in the franchise's 12 film history.

He later claimed that he had been caught off guard by a journalist who had 'doorstepped' him.

But the plot has now thickened, with the journalist accused of the 'doorstepping' questioning Pegg's version of events.

Pegg originally told the Huffington Post: “A lot of hard work and love went into that movie, and all JJ wanted to do was make a film that people really enjoyed.

“So, to be subject to that level of sort of, like, crass f**king ire, I just say f**k you. Not you, but the people who said that.”

Later, in an interview with Collider, he attempted to clear up the mess, saying: “Can I just please point out, following a few recent headlines of 'Simon Pegg says 'f**k you' to Star Trek fans,' I was doorstepped by a journalist very early in the morning who told me that Into Darkness had been voted the worst in a poll or something.”

But now he appears to have been called out.

The journalist in question, Mike Ryan, has taken to Twitter to defend himself.

“Learned today that I showed up on Simon Pegg's doorstep early in the morning to ask about 'Star Trek'. This was actually said in an interview,” he wrote.

“I suppose 'doorstep' equals a scheduled interview at the Waldorf Astoria and 'early in the morning' equals 3:45 pm. So, sure.”

“Seriously, actors in movies realise that we actually *record* interviews with audio devices, right?”

He has now threatened to post the audio of the interview, but has said he's waiting to hear from Pegg's reps first.
