Sparkle trailer: Whitney Houston’s final movie role revealed

The trailer for ‘Sparkle’, which features Whitney Houston’s final movie performance, has been released.

The tragic singer, 48, who died in February, plays Effie – a mum who encourages her three daughters to seek fame as singers after she never made it herself.

It’s a remake of the 1976 version of 'Sparkle' about a 1960s girl group (loosely inspired by Diana Ross and The Supremes), and co-stars former 'American Idol winner Jordin Sparks in the title role plus Cee-Lo Green and comedian Mike Epps.

Houston makes jokes in the trailer and can also be seen singing the famous gospel hymn "His Eye On The Sparrow" at the end of the footage.

'Sparkle' was the singer’s first film role since 1996’s ‘The Preacher’s Wife’. She also starred in ‘The Bodyguard’, ‘ Waiting to Exhale’ and TV movie ‘Cinderella’.

Houston originally planned to produce the film more than 10-years-ago before another tragedy intervened. Late R&B singer Aaliyah was due to play the title role but was killed in a plane crash. The project was shelved.

‘Sparkle’ opens in the US on 17 August and 5 October in the UK.
