Warner Bros plan trilogy for J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter spin-off

It seems that Warner Bros is eager to make the most of the inevitable popularity of the continuation of the Harry Potter franchise.

Following last September’s announcement that Harry Potter author J.K Rowling would be penning a spin-off film for Warner Bros, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, it has now been revealed that the film will become a trilogy.

The studio’s CEO Kevin Tsujihara confirmed the news to The New York Times, who report that “Three megamovies are planned” about the wizarding world’s accomplished magizoologist Newt Scamander.

Set seven decades before the start of the Harry Potter story, the Fantastic Beasts films will follow Scamander’s adventures, starting in New York. Rowling and Warners both insist that the films won’t be prequels or sequels.

The newspaper’s profile on the Warner’s boss also sees Rowling reveal that he’s the reason she agreed to adapt her 54-page Hogwarts textbook into a film.

“When I say he made Fantastic Beasts happen, it isn’t PR-speak but the literal truth,” says the author.

“We had one dinner, a follow-up telephone call and then I got out the rough draft that I’d thought was going to be an interesting bit of memorabilia for my kids and started rewriting!

“When Kevin got the top job, he brought a new energy, which rubbed off. He’s a very engaging person, thoughtful and funny.”

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is currently in development. No release date has been set.
