'Wizard of Oz'-based musical 'Wicked' is to be made into a movie 'sooner rather than later', according to reports.

Though not yet officially green-lit, Universal Pictures boss Adam Fogelson has said that the adaptation is moving ahead, in the wake of the successful transition of 'Les Miserable' to the screen, thanks to director Tom Hooper.

“Wicked has been an enormous win for this company. The way it works, we should be in agreement together on when the right time to do this is,” he told the Hollywood Reporter.

“But I will tell you I believe that we are collectively moving toward 'Wicked' coming to the screen sooner rather than later.”

It has previously been reported that Stephen Daldry, the director of 'Billy Elliot', was in line to helm the project.

Based on a book by Gregory Maguire, the musical follows the 'Wizard of Oz' story from the perspective of the witches.

It's run on Broadway since 2003, and in London since 2006, winning a wealth of international awards.
