San Andreas Director Keen To Make Superman Movie

Brad Peyton, director of new summer disaster movie ‘San Andreas’ with everyone’s favourite musclebound behemoth Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, has expressed his interest in helming a Superman movie.

Given that he and Johnson were at one point both attached to a big screen adaptation of comparatively lesser-known DC Comic character Lobo - before Johnson and/or the studio opted to go with ‘Shazam’ instead - it was only natural for Digital Spy to ask Peyton whether there were any other DC properties he’d like a crack at.

- Batman Confirmed For Suicide Squad
- First Glimpse Of Jared Leto’s Joker
- Chris Pine Joining Wonder Woman?

The Canadian director wasted no time setting his sights right at the top…

“I really, really like Superman. Obviously, Batman is super cool, but the only problem with Batman is that Tim Burton who is probably my biggest influence as a kid made Batman and then Christopher Nolan just knocked that out of the park.

“Superman, I really like the juxtaposition. It’s cool that the strongest guy in the room can be the flub at work. And I always find it so tragic and such a phenomenal concept that Lois Lane loves Superman, but doesn’t look at Clark Kent. I just think that is such a phenomenal aspect of a character dynamic.

“Obviously, that would be unbelievably exciting. How could you not take that shot? It’s Superman! If [DC] said ‘hey Brad, it’s free, take any character,’ I’d say, ‘I’ll take Superman.’ Let’s go to the top, you know?”

Of course, the odds of this being the case any time soon would seem to be slim-to-none. ‘Man of Steel’ director Zack Snyder has since gone on to helm ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice,’ and is penciled in to direct the two volume ‘Justice League’ movie scheduled for 2017 and 2019.

However, whilst Snyder would appear to have the monopoly on the Man of Steel for the next five years or so, a further standalone Superman film is said to be on the cards post-2020 - so if Snyder decides to stand down, and Peyton is patient, then who knows? (Although he'll have to do without that Lois and Clark dynamic, as 'Man of Steel' established right away that Lois knows Superman's secret identity.)

On the other hand, no director has yet been announced for Dwayne Johnson’s DC debut as anti-hero Black Adam in ‘Shazam’ - and given that he and Peyton have worked together twice already on ‘Journey 2: the Mysterious Island’ and ‘San Andreas,’ with a third collaboration due in 2016′s ‘Journey 3: From the Earth to the Moon,’ Peyton would seem as likely a candidate as any to pick up the reins on ‘Shazam’ as well.

In the same interview, Digital Spy asked ‘San Andreas’ star Carla Gugino - a frequent collaborator with Zack Snyder, having starred in ‘Watchmen’ and ‘Sucker Punch,’ and doing some voice work on ‘Man of Steel’ - whether she too would be keen on working in the DC universe.

Gugino replied, “Absolutely. First of all, I would go anywhere with Zack Synder, to do any movie with he and Debbie [the director’s wife and producer Deborah Snyder]…

“I’ve now become quite an explorer of the graphic novel world with ‘Sin City’ and ‘Watchmen’ obviously, and ‘Sucker Punch’ was very graphic novel influenced, so I think DC just needs to be next on my list.”

Still, Gugino admitted she didn’t have any specific character in mind.

‘San Andreas’ is out in UK cinemas now.
