Scarlett Johansson On Black Widow's 'Sad Past'

She may not yet have her own solo film, but few can deny the importance of Scarlett Johansson and her character Black Widow to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In a world of superhero movies often criticised for a lack of diversity, Joahansson’s Natasha Romanoff has proven a popular and enduring character, to the point of being one of ‘Avengers Assemble’s focal points. Widow’s screentime was only a couple of minutes short of Iron Man and Captain America’s.

In ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ she will be given a prominent role again by writer/director Joss Whedon, and Johansson has hinted toward her side of the story in an interview with W Magazine.

"People were surprised that I wanted to play a comic book heroine," said the actress. "But I loved ‘Iron Man’, and I met with Marvel to see what was possible. I had done my research, and the Black Widow character resonated with me.

"She is dark and has faced death so many times that she has a deep perspective on the value of life. In the sequel [Age of Ultron], you learn more about the sadness in her past. I think of her that way.

"Black Widow is a superhero, but she’s also human. She’s small, but she’s strong. It’s hard not to admire her."

The ‘Age of Ultron’ footage we’ve seen so far hints at this, and strong rumours have suggested an element of romance being added to Black Widow’s story as well. It’ll be a busy film for Johansson, and she’s likely to return next year with Cap and Iron Man for ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

'Avengers: Age of Ultron' will be released on 23 April.
