See Jake Gyllenhaal’s Beefcake Transformation In Southpaw Trailer

Pictures of Jake Gyllenhaal’s amazing transformation for forthcoming boxing drama ‘Southpaw’ emerged last year, and now we can see him in action.

The first trailer has landed, and it finds the actor in lean, mean, musclebound form.

Gyllenhaal plays Billy Hope, a hot-headed boxer whose life quickly spirals out of control.

We’ll let the trailer get on with revealing (almost all of) the plot, as we see Gyllenhaal joined by Rachel McAdams as his doomed wife, Curtis ‘50 Cent’ Jackson as his manager and Forest Whitaker as the gym owner who gives Billy a chance at redemption.

There also looks to be a sterling performance from young actress Clare Foley as Billy’s daughter Alice.

Penned by Kurt Sutter – he of ‘Sons of Anarchy’ fame – it’s directed by ‘Training Day’ helmsman Antoine Fuqua, with a soundtrack from Eminem (who was originally in line to play the lead).

Those first pictures of Gyllenhaal in the role came at around the same time that he was presenting a wiry, adrenaline-addled look for his thriller ‘Nightcrawler’.

Judging by this first look at ‘Southpaw’, it’s another impressive transformation, and all thanks to a gruelling training regime.

“Jake is going to change how people see him,” Fuqua said in November.

“I had him training twice a day in the boxing ring, he did two-a-days seven days a week. I pretty much had him with me and my trainer every day. I took him to almost every fight.

“I had him train at Floyd Mayweather’s gym in Vegas and we watched Floyd’s fights, and the Manny Pacquiao fight. He trained in New York at Church Gym with real fighters. We literally turned him into a beast.”

It’s due out in the UK on July 31.
