Shazam: The Rock Talks 'Anti-Hero' Black Adam

We might have over four years to wait before we see Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson take on his long-coveted role of Black Adam in New Line/DC’s ‘Shazam,’ but the man himself doesn’t seem likely to let us forget how much he’s looking forward to it.

In a recent Twitter chat with fans (dubbed, not unreasonably, ‘#RockTalk’), Johnson addressed the question of Black Adam:

It does still seem a little surprising that we’ve got such a long wait for ‘Shazam,’ given that Johnson first started dropping hints about a future DC role around this time last year. Inevitably this resulted in rampant speculation about potential roles, with the John Stewart Green Lantern, Lobo, Cyborg and Doomsday all touted as possibilities.

However, Johnson has in fact been linked to ‘Shazam’ for some time, as the film was initially in development at New Line back in the early 2000s - yet even then, it was reportedly Black Adam he was most keen to play, rather than the title role.

Originally introduced as a villain way back in 1945, when Shazam! was still officially called Captain Marvel and published by the long-since defunct Fawcett Comics, Black Adam has subsequently been developed by DC Comics into a more ambiguous character with both villainous and heroic tendencies.

Even so, it remains a bold move for DC and New Line to cast so big a star as Johnson in what would seem to be a supporting role - and it begs the question, just who can they cast in the title role that can match The Rock, both in terms of screen charisma and physical stature?

Well, it could be a while before we find out, as ‘Shazam!’ isn’t due until 5 April 2019 - a few weeks before Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War Part 2’ lands, and two months before Warners/DC’s ‘Justice League Part 2.’

Of course, we won’t have to wait that long to see Johnson again, as 2015 will see him make the big screen that bit bigger in ‘San Andreas’ and ‘Furious 7.’
