Shia LaBeouf in ‘Fury’

We all know he’s ‘method’, but Shia LaBeouf’s antics on the set of Fury also involved self-mutilation, according to one of his co-stars.

Logan Lerman told the British edition of GQ that LaBeouf repeatedly cut his own face with a knife to make his war wounds look fully authentic.

“We were in make-up and they were putting cuts on Shia and I said, ‘Yeah, yeah, it looks good.’ And Shia was like, ‘No, it doesn’t look real’,” he said.

“Then he walks out into the hallway and says, ‘Hey man, wanna see something fun? Check this out…’ and he takes out a knife and cuts his face. And for the whole movie he kept opening these cuts on his face. That’s all real.” LaBeouf joins the rarified realm of actors who’ve cut themselves for roles: Mickey Rourke also famously nicked his face for The Wrestler.

In addition to the facial cuts, the 28-year-old LaBeouf had his dentist remove one of his front teeth for the role of World War II tank crew-member Boyd ‘Bible’ Swan. The actor snapped a toothless pic of himself, and later posted it to fans on his Twitter page. He was also spotted multiple times wearing battle fatigues during his downtime.

LaBeouf’s extreme antics don’t always make for an easy time on set. His Lawless costar Mia Wasikowska recently said in an interview with HuffPo that, "He’s a very method actor, and so I was on the receiving end of the method." But LaBeouf impressed at least one other Fury co-star: In the same feature, GQ cover man Brad Pitt praised the actor.

“Oh, I love this boy. He’s one of the best actors I’ve ever seen,” Pitt said. “He’s full-on commitment, man. He’s living it like no one else, let me tell you.”

Pitt added that he and LaBeouf joined together to berate co-star Scott Eastwood — son of Clint — after they spotted him spitting tobacco on their tank during a take.

“We were driving down the road, I’m in the turret, Shia is at the other turret, and Scott is on the back, spitting juice,” said Pitt.

“And I’m starting to get p——ed off, I’m starting to get hot, because this is our home, he’s disrespecting our home, you know? So I said, in the scene with the cameras rolling, ‘You’re going to clean that [bleep] up’.

“Shia clocks it, and you have to understand, we’ve been through severe boot camp already; we’ve been through a lot in this tank.

“Shia saw it and felt the same — he’s disrespecting our home. So Shia had the same reaction I did and started having some words.

“I had to get in after the cameras were rolling and explain it to Scotty. The funny thing is, when we got home at the end of the day and read the script, it said Scotty’s character is ‘chewing tobacco and spitting it on the back of the tank.’ He was just doing as instructed in the script! So we were the knobs in the end.”
