Shia LaBeouf Is 'Very Method' Says Mia Wasikowska

Does notorious actor Shia LaBeouf have a method to his madness? Or is there a madness to his method?

The eccentric actor is no stranger to the tabloids. In recent years, he’s been booted from a Broadway show, wore a paper bag over his head on the red carpet, and conducted a bizarre apology tour (including a skywritten mea culpa) after he was accused of plagiarising from writer Daniel Clowes.

Mia Wasikowska, star of Alice in Wonderland and the upcoming Maps to the Stars, sat down with HuffPost Live to discuss her experiences with LaBeouf while filming 2012’s ‘Lawless’, a well-reviewed film about moonshine and bootlegging during the Great Depression.

LaBeouf has said that he drank moonshine while filming in an attempt to get into character. That proved somewhat problematic for Waskikowska, who played his love interest and shared many scenes with him.

"He’s a very method actor, and so I was on the receiving end of the method," she told HuffPost Live, very diplomatically.

She continued, “You meet so many different people, and sometimes you connect with them and you share that you have a similar approach and sometimes you don’t. And you just have to let them do their thing and hope it doesn’t affect you too deeply.”

LaBeouf has long been aware of how his preparation for the role took a toll on his costar. Back in 2012, LaBeouf spoke to the New York Post’s Page Six about the controversy.

"She was calling her attorney, like, "Get me the **** of here." … Mia was ready to walk away from the movie. I was really pretty aggressive about it, and not in any kind of weird, strange way, but I don’t think she had ever experienced anything like that."

While the shoot proved difficult for Wasikowska, LaBeouf’s acting was widely praised. The troubled actor is currently seeking treatment for alcohol-related issues. Earlier this month, he pled guilty to disorderly conduct during a Broadway performance of ‘Cabaret’.
