There’s been a lot of talk surrounding Neill Blomkamp’s plans for ‘Alien 5’, but he’s revealed that work could officially begin as early as this week, and what’s more, Ripley is back.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, ‘Chappie’ director Blomkamp was quizzed about whether Sigourney Weaver would be reprising her role as the iconic heroine Ellen Ripley, as well as when work on the fifth movie would begin.

While Weaver wouldn’t outright confirm her involvement, she answered with a fairly implicit, “There are two factors [Neill Blomkamp] needs: Ripley and the Aliens.”

Blomkamp, however, was far more forthcoming when asked about her name on the casting sheet. “She’ll be in the cast,” he confirmed. “She is the ‘Alien’ franchise, to me, so yeah.”

The news is hardly a shock, considering the pair have pretty much talked about it non-stop over the past few weeks, with every journalist in sight asking the same questions about who’ll be in it and when will it begin production, but this is the first time we’ve been given some solid answers rather than vague or ambiguous retorts.

It’s obviously exciting news to hear that Weaver is officially back and that the film could be underway as we speak, especially with the ‘District 9’ director’s keen eye for visuals and a unique approach to science fiction aesthetic.

Regardless of how mixed the reaction to ‘Chappie’ has been in some circles, optimism levels remain high when it comes to the next ‘Alien’ film, because, let’s face it, it can’t be worse than ‘Resurrection’, can it?
