Simon Kinberg: X-Men Apocalypse Will Explore Beast & Mystique's Relationship

'X-Men' writer Simon Kinberg, who seems to be on a never-ending promotional tour for Fox's mutant franchise, has been dropping more details about 2016's 'X-Men: Apocaylpse'.

Speaking to Collider, Kinberg spoke of how the film will finish a trilogy started with ‘First Class’, how much fun it has been setting it in the 80s and what relationships will feature most in the film.

"I will say that it is definitely the close of a trilogy for those ‘First Class’ characters, which isn’t to say we won’t see them in future movies, hopefully we will, but it’s a completion of an arc for them," he says.

"I think that the friendship between Erik and Charles, which has always been so integral to the franchise, is something we’re continuing to explore and hopefully deepen with’ Apocalypse’."

"And the relationship between Beast and Mystique is a really interesting one that we didn’t have a lot of time to explore in ‘Days of Future Past’, so we’ll have an opportunity to do more of that."

Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Beast (Nicolas Hoult) got a bit flirty in ‘First Class’, finding common ground in their body image issues and later their blue body image issues. ‘Days of Future Past’ focused much more on Xavier (James McAboy) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and their relationship with Mystique.

If the story does play a key part in ‘Apocalypse’ we wouldn’t want to be on set when Hoult and Lawrence act together. The former real-life couple broke up earlier this year. Awkward.

Kinberg went on to talk about the film’s budget, saying he doesn’t know what it’ll be yet but reaffirming Fox’s belief in the filmmaking team following the success of ‘Days of Future Past’ earlier this year. He also talked about setting the film in the 80s.

"We’re having a lot of fun with the idea of the 80s. It’s a decade that [director Bryan Singer] and I both grew up in and so the music, the style, the aesthetic, the legacy of 80s movies is something we’re really having fun with."

'X-Men: Apocalypse' will also star Hugh Jackman and some of the original 'X-Men' cast in some capacity. The film will see the mutant superheroes face off with the titular Apocalypse, an ancient and all-powerful mutant hell-bent on human exitinction.

The film will be released on May 19, 2016.
