Simon Pegg Considers William Shatner Cameo For Star Trek 3

It looks as though the original Captain James T. Kirk might just beam up for ‘Star Trek 3’… as Simon Pegg reveals he’s open to a William Shatner cameo.

During an interview with Digital Spy, the 45-year-old ‘Star Trek’ star and co-writer revealed that he would consider a Captain Kirk cameo… as long as the story demands it.

“It’s always all about whether the story’s right. It’s pointless crowbarring these things in as a gimmick, because that does the story and the film a disservice. But I have no doubt in my mind that he could play Captain Kirk until the day he decides to goes off to the final frontier.”

Of course, the rebooted ‘Star Trek’ franchise hasn’t exactly shied away from cameo appearances – including Leonard Nimoy as the iconic Mr Spock in both the 2009 ‘Star Trek’ as well as the more recent ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’.

But will Shatner return to the bridge?

“William Shatner is an amazing actor,” he said, “and has such an incredible body of work which transcends just his time as Captain Kirk.”

Obviously, there’s just one problem – would a Captain Kirk cameo make ‘Star Trek 3’ a bit too ‘Star Treky’ for Pegg’s seemingly more mainstream tastes?

It looks as though he has a rather strong answer to that…

“I’m kind of getting tired of having click-bait headlines reduce the things I say to easily objectionable comments,” he said. “I didn’t say that. I didn’t mean that, certainly. Not at all. It’s fifty-years of ‘Star Trek’ next year and this ‘Star Trek’ will be as much ‘Star Trek’ as it possibly can be… and it’s important to me that it is.”

Will that be the case? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

But if there’s one thing that just screams ‘Star Trek’, that’s William Shatner.

‘Star Trek 3’ heads to cinemas on 8 July 2016.
