Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For – Before And After The Visual Effects

The first ‘Sin City’ film was rightly hailed as visually groundbreaking thanks to its pioneering use of a “digital backlot”. Director Robert Rodriguez brought Frank Miller’s source comics to life using real actors and foreground props shot against a green-screen environment. The backgrounds were then added in post-production and colourised into black and white, giving the final film the look of a comic book brought to life.

It’s a striking technique and one that Rodriguez and Miller have resurrected for the sequel ‘Sin City 2: A Dame To Kill For’ which hits cinemas this week. It means that the film-makers didn’t need to shoot on location, or even leave the backlot. There is no real Basin City, it’s all built by a computer.

Need proof? Here’s a look at some behind-the-scenes shots (taken from this B-roll video) before and after the visual effects have been added.
