Sony Denies Spider-Man/Marvel Deal Reports

Sony Pictures has denied reports that a deal has been struck to introduce Spider-Man into Marvel Studios’ Avengers-centric cinematic universe.

The report from notorious rumour-mongers Latino Review, had stated that Spidey (with a new actor in the role) would appear in 2018’s ‘Avengers: Infinity War - Part 1’. They also detailed a number of other massive potential spoilers for future Marvel movies.

Speaking to Comic Book Resources however, a Sony rep said Latino Review’s report was just an “old rumour” with “no validity whatsoever”.

Sony’s quick assertion that a deal has not been struck likely means that no decision has yet been made, as the majority of rumours regarding Marvel and Sony supehero films aren’t commented on so quickly and so absolutely. However that doesn’t mean a deal isn’t still on the table.

Leaked emails following last year’s Sony Pictures hack revealed that Marvel had attempted to work a deal with Sony (who own the big screen rights to Marvel’s character) to get him to appear in 2016’s ‘Captain America: Civil War’ but the window for that to happen is now closed.

Another revelation from the leaks was that Sony were planning to hold a Spider-Man summit this month to decide the future of their troubled but very important franchise. One of the options for Sony is still a deal with Marvel, so fans of the idea (which given Marvel Studios’ current run of form will be nearly everybody) still have reason to be hopeful.
