Spider-Man: 16-Year-Old Mateus Ward Meets With Marvel?

If Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios’ new Spider-Man is to appear in ‘Captain America: Civil War’ - even in the form of a cameo - then the hunt will already be well under way for their young star.

After all, whoever they pick needs to be locked down to a sizeable contract that will include at least three or four performances over the next four years in ‘Civil War’, 2017’s solo ‘Spider-Man’ and a likely role in at least one part of ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, probably both.

Badass Digest’s Devin Faraci has been told by a number of sources that the hunt is indeed ongoing, and cites another source as saying that Marvel has met with young TV star Mateus Ward. “It was so super secret they held the audition at a house, not any sort of office, but word leaks out, as it always will,” writes Faraci.

Wards’ is just the actor who happens to be named, so it should be stressed that this is no indication that he’s favourite for the role. It does however further the assumption that Marvel and Sony are looking to cast a very young lead, and soon.

Ward is best known for a part in Showtime’s comedy series ‘Weeds’, but has also appeared in other US TV shows such as ‘NCIS’ and ‘Hostages’.

Following Sony and Marvel’s joint announcement in February speculation turned to whether the new big screen Spider-Man might be Miles Morales - the most recent man behind the mask - but that was debunked over the weekend when Marvel’s chief creative officer Joe Quesada told a fan it would be Peter Parker as the lead.

As of now the only locked-down appearance for the new Spider-Man is in the 2017 solo film, but it was said during the announcement of the deal that he would appear beforehand in an upcoming Marvel Studios film - and ‘Civil War’ is the only one that really fits the bill. The timing of this news also seems to suggest this.

The news also falls in line with other reports saying that Marvel want the new Spider-Man to grow up with the role and hold it for many years, so that they may tell a somewhat complete Spider-Man tale. Spider-Man has always been about growing up, so it would be great to see an actor actually do so during the series rather than be a guy in his late 20s and early 30s playing a teenager, as has been the case before.

'Spider-Man' will return for his first full solo film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe on 28 July, 2017. ‘The Cabin In The Woods’ director Drew Goddard is currently favourite to write and direct the feature.
