Yahoo Movies Spider-Man 3 Was ‘Awful’ Admits Sam Raimi
Sam Raimi has admitted that even he was disappointed by ‘Spider-Man 3’.
The third instalment to Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ franchise was deemed a disappointment by most moviegoers, who believed that it was a convoluted mess. And now the director has revealed that he shares these thoughts.
“It’s a movie that just didn’t work very well,” Raimi explained to the Nerdist podcast. “I tried to make it work.”

But where does Sam Raimi think that he went wrong with ‘Spider-Man 3’? He believes that he his lack of enthusiasm for the film’s characters ultimately permeated throughout the finished effort.
“I didn’t really believe in all the characters,” he admitted, “so that couldn’t be hidden from people who loved ‘Spider-Man’. If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it.”
Raimi also believes that trying to raise the stakes after ‘Spider-Man 2’ hampered the rhythm and tone of the follow-up, especially since the relationships and characters of the first two instalments were sacrificed in favour of this attempted progression.
“I think that’s what doomed us,” he continued. “I should’ve just stuck with the characters and the relationships and progressed them to the next step and not tried to top the bar.”
When Nerdist’s interviewer tried to placate Raimi’s fears, the ‘Evil Dead’ filmmakers insisted that ‘Spider-Man 3’ was “awful!”
That is probably a bit of an overreaction though.
While ‘Spider-Man 3’ was ultimately a misstep that in fact led to the disintegration of Raimi’s Peter Parker adventures and ushered in Marc Webb’s ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ tales, it still possessed plenty of spectacle and action to keep viewers enthralled.
But it was ultimately weighed down by its trifecta of villains, which included Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman, James Franco’s New Goblin, and Topher Grace’s Venom, while Raimi was unable to recapture the wit and warmth of the first two ‘Spider-Man’ films.
It is still better than ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ though.
