Spider-Man Closes In On A Director

It looks as though Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man’ may soon have a director as a reported shortlist shows Ted Melfi and Jonathan Levine are in the running.

According to Deadline, the two directors are currently topping the shortlist. But they’re not the only ones up for consideration.

“After a long vetting process, Sony Pictures and Marvel are zeroed in on the favorites, St Vincent helmer Ted Melfi and Warm Bodies’ Jonathan Levine. Still in contention are John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein, the director-writers of the updated version of John Hughes’ Vacation.”

And that’s not all – there’s another contender who might take everyone by surprise.

“[Also in the running] is Jon Watts, a top commercials guy who made his feature debut with Cop Car, a Kevin Bacon-starrer that debuted at Sundance.”

It’s a rather eclectic mix then… and I can’t help thinking that whoever lands the job of directing the new ‘Spider-Man’ movie will yield some pretty interesting results.

According to Deadline, this new shortlist has already been narrowed down from around a dozen potential directors… and this is all moving rather quickly, presumably due to Marvel and Sony’s rather last-minute negotiations on the project.

But will the new director have a lot more creative input from the very start?

“Not clear is whether the filmmaker who gets the job will write the script,” they added. “Marvel and Sony are meeting with writers, but several of these finalists can write a script, too. Stay tuned.”

It certainly sounds as though whoever lands the directing gig will have their work cut out for them – after all, if they’re going to be writing the movie too, it could prove to be quite a huge commitment. And that’s not even looking forward to potential sequels.

Will any of these new names land the coveted job? For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

The new ‘Spider-Man’ movie heads to cinemas on 28 July 2017.
