Spider-Man: Young Aunt May Spin-Off Rumoured

Another week, another potential new ‘Spider-Man’ movie in the offing at Sony. This week’s is quite something.

According to serial scoopers Latino Review, Sony are working on a spin-off that will follow a young Aunt May… yes, you read that correctly.

"The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC’s ‘Mad Men’," reads their report, "Which sounds like a way of saying ‘classier ‘Agent Carter” without name-dropping Marvel’s upcoming [TV] series."

In recent weeks it has become abundantly clear that Sony are unsure where to take their ‘Spider-Man’ franchise next following two commercially but not critically successful ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films starring Andrew Garfield.

Last month it was rumoured to be a film teaming up various women from the Spider-Man universe - something which has never happened in the comics. Code-named Glass Ceiling, it seemed a perfectly smart idea with obvious potential, but an Aunt May spy movie? We’re not convinced.

Aunt May as a character has very rarely been explored in this way, and the espionage aspect mentioned would certainly be a creation of Sony’s, not Marvel Comics’ writers.

An attempt was made to flesh out the character’s back-story in 2003 with a comic mini-series focusing on a teenage May and her relationship with Uncle Ben. It was not well-received by fans in large part because it attempted to ret-con the story and make Aunt May Peter Parker’s biological mother.

Should this film happen (and the very idea is enough to make us take a healthy pinch of salt) then where next? A spin-off following Mary-Jane’s vigilante parents, one about Flash Thompson’s career as an alcoholic Basketball coach, or maybe a short film about Robbie Robertson’s trip to the Daily Bugle printers?

The possibilities are endless, but seriously Sony, revisit the Glass Ceiling idea. It’s a lot better.
