Star Wars 7 Costumes Reveal Intriguing Character Details

‘Star Wars VII’ has unveiled some its props and costumes during the fan event, Star Wars Celebration… and they might just give us some clues about the galaxy far, far away.

It’s no secret that details about ‘Star Wars VII’ have been scarce… and until now, we’ve only seen sneaked glimpses in leaked images and concept art. But with Star Wars Celebration now in full swing, it seems they’ve unveiled some impressive props from ‘The Force Awakens’.

And they might even tell us something about the movie.

The exhibition floor at Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim is packed full of ‘Star Wars VII’ props and costumes – items which were used during filming of ‘The Force Awakens’. And with the likes of Kylo Ren, Rey and Finn taking centre stage, it seems there’s some rather revealing stuff there… if you read between the lines.

Here, we see John Boyega’s full costume as Finn – the recovering stormtrooper who seemingly sees the error of his ways, deciding to escape his life under Imperial (or rather, The First Order) rule and head off to join the Resistance.

Obviously, it’s an intriguing look at Boyega’s civvies… but more importantly, it looks as though the accompanying concept art depicts him with a rather familiar weapon – one from a more civilised age.

Of course, the lightsaber depicted in this concept art looks strikingly similar to the one owned by Anakin Skywalker, which was then passed on to his son, Luke. But why does Finn have it in his possession? Could he be related to the Skywalkers?

“The Force is strong in my family,” says Luke in the newly released teaser trailer. “My father has it, I have it, my sister has it… you have that power too.”

Obviously, there’s the little problem of John Boyega’s racial background if he is, in fact related to the Skywalkers… but I have a theory. We’ve heard almost nothing about Lupita Nyong’O’s role in ‘Star Wars VII’ and still have no idea who she might be playing.

But could she appear in a flashback as Finn’s mother? If Lupita’s character does appear in a flashback – the first in ‘Star Wars’ history – we may just find that she had a relationship with Luke Skywalker himself…

Could Luke be talking to Finn in the ‘Star Wars VII’ trailer? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but the iconic lightsaber isn’t the only familiar weapon that’s popped up.

Here, we see Daisy Ridley’s costume for the character Rey – a junkyard scavenger who has been described as self-sufficient, and has been rumoured to be living out of the innards of a downed AT-AT.

But while the costume preview gives us a glimpse of her scavenger outfit, it’s the concept art again that seems to give the game away.

Clutching a blaster pistol in her right hand, it’s a weapon that looks strikingly similar to the one owned by Han Solo – a modified DL-44 Heavy Blaster Pistol. Of course, Han’s original prop was modelled around a German Mauser pistol, and has a rather distinctive look… one which is shared by Rey’s blaster.

Of course, we’ve heard plenty of rumours suggesting that Rey is in fact a Solo… and that could well be the case. If that is Han’s blaster pistol, it’s certainly intriguing evidence. But for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

And in the meantime, there’s yet-another lightsaber causing quite a stir…

Finally, we get a much closer look at Kylo Ren’s crossguard lightsaber from the first ‘Star Wars VII’ trailer. And the surprising part? It hasn’t been put together very well at all. But perhaps that’s the point.

We’ve heard numerous rumours that Kylo Ren is a collector of Sith artifacts… and it’s likely that his lightsaber has in fact been scavenged from relics left behind by fallen Sith lords. But does this provide an explanation for the extravagant hilt?

Ever since the first trailer appeared, I’ve been of the opinion that Kylo’s lightsaber has been built by an enthusiast – someone who is far more interested in the aesthetic than the practical use of his blade. It’s been pointed out that the blade itself is depicted as unstable, with the crossguard seeming a little out of place.

And now a closer look at the hilt shows us this rough-and-ready assembly that has clearly not been put together by an expert hand. And that may well back up those earlier rumours.

Of course, there are plenty of other props and costumes on display, including some scale models of the Millennium Falcon and the new X-Wings, as well as some desert scavengers from the planet Jakku.

And there’s even a flamethrowing trooper and snowtrooper thrown in for good measure.

But I get the feeling we’ve been given lots of clues hidden in plain sight amongst these displays. And it won’t be long before we find out.
