Star Wars 7 Score Will Reference Classic Themes

The original ‘Star Wars’ score is one of the most iconic soundtracks of all time… and it looks as though composer John Williams will be bringing some of it back.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, the legendary ‘Star Wars’ composer revealed that his themes created for the earlier movies may reappear in ‘The Force Awakens’.

“There are some scenes where we do make reference to earlier thematic pieces,” he said… but it looks as though the score is still unfinished. “We haven’t done it yet, but we’re planning to do it.”

Of course, the 83-year-old composer has worked on all of the previous ‘Star Wars’ movies, from the original trilogy right up to ‘Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’. But how will these previous themes fit into ‘The Force Awakens’?

“It’s something that I think will seem very natural and right in the moments for which we’ve chosen to do these kinds of quotes,” he explained. “There aren’t many of them, but there are a few that I think are important and will seem very much a part of the fabric of the piece in a positive and constructive way.”

Unfortunately, it remains a bit of a mystery as to what these themes will actually be… as well as how they will appear in ‘Star Wars VII’. But there are plenty of moments from the recent teaser trailers which could signal the return of some classic melodies.

“It’s all a continuation of an initial set of ideas,” he explained. “It’s a bit like adding paragraphs to a letter that’s been going on for a number of years.”

“It’s an extension of something that’s been really organic and continually growing,” he added. “It’s a very, very different process. That’s really the best analogy I can come up with at the moment so I’ll repeat it: it’s like adding paragraphs to a letter rather than beginning the letter again.”

Obviously, ‘Star Wars’ wouldn’t be the same without the titular fanfare… and I get the feeling that’s one element that simply won’t change. But as for the rest of the movie, it will be interesting to see how John Williams balances the old with the new.

Much like the rest of the production on ‘Star Wars VII’.

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ heads to cinemas on 18 December 2015.
