Star Wars And Marvel TV Channels Could Happen

‘Star Wars’ and Marvel could get their own dedicated TV channels… as Disney hints at plans to dominate the small screen.

During a recent investors call (via Daily Finance) Disney CEO Bob Iger hinted that we could eventually see a ‘Star Wars’ or Marvel TV channel.

“We have said that with these channels and these brands — ESPN, ABC, Disney, maybe even down the road something related to Star Wars and Marvel — we do have an ability as a company to take product, specifically filmed entertainment, television, movies, directly to consumers.”

Of course, Disney already broadcasts its very own channels with a slew of animated content readily available… and with the rights to both ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Marvel’ content in the bag, it’s certainly not a stretch to see them capitalise on that.

But what would this mean for Disney? And what kind of channels could we expect?

Well, from the wording of Iger’s comment, it sounds as though it’s an opportunity for Disney to deliver content that’s already been produced, directly to the consumers. That means we’re unlikely to see any new ‘Star Wars’ or ‘Marvel’ shows made exclusively for their channels.

Instead, it sounds as though Disney is considering a platform for their already produced content – whether it’s franchise movies, TV shows or any of the other shorts and animated features that may also be available.

Essentially, this could mean a ‘Star Wars’ TV channel with the original movies on a loop… maybe even broadcasting fan-favourites such as ‘Star Wars Rebels’ or ‘The Clone Wars’.

It certainly presents an interesting idea – giving fans the opportunity to catch up with Marvel movies they may have missed without going out and purchasing the Phase One boxed set, etc… as well as providing additional content for the more hardcore fans.

But will these plans ever see the light of day? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it’s a very interesting concept. And I wouldn’t say no to a 24/7 Marvel movie marathon.
