Star Wars: Rogue One Concept Art Detailed

The first piece of ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ concept art has been revealed to Disney shareholders… but while we don’t have the image itself, we do have a detailed description.

It’s one of the biggest ‘Star Wars’ announcements of the year – the first ever spin-off has been officially titled ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’. But while fans were busy pondering what that meant, it looks as though shareholders were treated to something extra – a first look at some official concept art from the film.

Note: The images in this article are for illustrative purposes only. The actual concept art has not been made public as yet.

Unveiled during last week’s Disney shareholder’s meeting, the ‘Rogue One’ concept art was seen only by Disney shareholders… and due to the ‘no electronics’ policy, it’s yet to leak to the internet.

But the folks at /Film did convince one shareholder to give them a detailed description.

“Dozens of figures in fatigues appeared to be storming something with a strange helicopterish vehicle (open on the sides) in the background, releasing more troops,” said one source.

And they also reiterated what they’d heard from several sources.

“The concept art was a gritty ‘dark/gray image’: ‘very dark and done in greens, so it evoked the idea that it was being done under the cloak of night’. The art showed 4-5 armored, soldier-like persons on the ground, ‘with two to three ships in the background’. Disney blogger/investor StitchKingdom says that the imagery ‘evoked concept art of a video game’ and it ‘screamed Halo to me’.”

“[The ships] ‘seemed a bit bigger than X-Wings… more like a transport ship of sorts’ but probably not as big as the Tantive IV (the transport ship we see Darth Vader board at the beginning of A New Hope). The characters were all ‘generic’ looking ‘wearing the same dark outfit… I didn’t see anything that would distinguish them as individuals.”

And when they asked LA Times reporter Daniel Miller if they looked more like Rebel Alliance fighters or a band of bounty hunters, he replied: “Neither. They were masked but not whimsical looking like those bounty hunters.”

But what does this all mean?

Well for one thing, many fans are surprised that the first concept art for ‘Rogue One’ didn’t feature those iconic X-Wings – after all, the title seems to suggest it would follow the leader of the iconic Rogue Squadron.

But perhaps most importantly, it could backup earlier rumours that suggest a daring raid in order to steal the plans for the original Death Star. The rumour began over at /Film when they detailed a significant plot rumour that had been passed to them from an inside source.

According to the rumour, the film follows a band of mercenaries as they tackle a dangerous mission to steal the plans for the original Death Star – the event that puts the entire original trilogy in motion.

Although this concept art sounds rather vague for the time being, it’s interesting that such a battle would be depicted early on… and with no reference to the previously mentioned Rogue Squadron.

Will ‘Rogue One’ actually feature the Death Star plan heist? For now, we’ll have to wait and see. But it’s an interesting thought.
