It’s been an exciting week for ‘Star Wars’ fans after the title for ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ was finally revealed. Of course, it didn’t take long for us to start pondering exactly what it means. After all, we know very little at this stage… and are unlikely to find out more for some time.

But here’s what we know so far…

Star Wars: Rogue One UK Release Date

Even before we found out the film’s official title, we knew that ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ would head to cinemas in 2016. In fact, it all started back when Disney made its first big announcements – revealing that we could expect a new ‘Star Wars’ film every year.

Of course, the plan is now well-known – that they will release a saga film every other year, with an all-new ‘Star Wars’ spin-off in between each instalment. And by the end of May last year, we found out the exact release date: 16 December 2016.

Gareth Edwards Will Direct Star Wars: Rogue One

After J.J. Abrams took the helm of ‘Star Wars VII’ all eyes turned to the spin-off. Who would take the plunge as the first ever ‘Star Wars’ spin-off director? Who would Disney want in the director’s chair?

It seems that honour went to ‘Godzilla’ director, Gareth Edwards.

Edwards rose to fame in 2010 after writing and directing the critically acclaimed sci-fi movie, ‘Monsters’. And after being chosen for ‘Godzilla’ in 2013, it looks as though he’s impressed all the right people.

But who has penned the script?

Star Wars: Rogue One Writers Reshuffle

Back when Gareth Edwards was announced to direct, we also found out that Gary Whitta (writer of ‘After Earth’ and ‘The Book of Eli’) would pen the first spin-off. In fact, we recently spoke to Gary about his experiences… but is the film still to be based on his original script?

After handing his draft in at the end of last year, Gary’s work on ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ came to an end… and he was soon replaced by ‘Cinderella’ scribe, Chris Weitz. Of course, Weitz was mentioned in the recent Disney shareholder’s meeting – the one where they finally announced the official title.

But what about Gary Whitta? His name was nowhere to be found. Does this mean that ‘Rogue One’ has moved in a very different direction? Or was this simply a slip of the tongue?

For now, we have to wait and see.

Felicity Jones Will Star In Star Wars: Rogue One

It’s no secret that a number of high-profile names have been linked to ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’ over the last few months. We’ve seen the likes of Aaron Paul and even Taron Egerton rumoured for leading roles in the spin-off films, with Rooney Mara and Tatiana Maslany also reportedly in the running.

But so far, it’s only Felicity Jones who has official been cast.

The 31-year-old British actress has starred in a number of high profile productions, including ‘The Theory of Everything’ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. And now she’ll be heading to the galaxy far, far away.

Star Wars: Rogue One Plot Rumours Involve The Death Star

Although no official details have been revealed about the plot of ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’, it looks as though we may have some idea about what happens… that is, if the rumours are to be believed.

The folks over at SlashFilm recently revealed a rather impressive rumour – essentially the entire premise of ‘Rogue One’.

According to their sources, the film revolves around a rag-tag band of mercenaries as they’re sent off on a very special mission – to steal the plans for the original Death Star. That’s right folks, it looks as though the first ever spin-off could tie directly into the events of the first ever ‘Star Wars’ film.

Of course, for now it remains a rumour… but will it turn out to be true? We’ll have to wait and see.
