Star Wars: Rogue One Teaser Reveals Death Star Heist Plot

Director Gareth Edwards has revealed the first story details of his ‘Star Wars’ spin-off 'Rogue One’ at a special Star Wars Celebration panel.

Edwards confirmed a few existing reports and even showed off a special teaser at the event sadly not streamed online.

“A band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans,” reads LucasFilm’s official synopsis.

The footage, reported by numerous attendees, began with Alec Guinness’ dialogue as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original film. A shot of a TIE Fighter flying over a tree-covered planet before the reveal of the original Death Star in the skies above.

The footage was created especially for the event and is not from the film itself, which will start shooting in the summer.

Set between 'Revenge of the Sith’ and 'A New Hope’, Edwards described the film as a war film and confirmed that first cast member Felicity Jones will play a Rebel soldier.

A few of the production team were also confirmed, including 'Zero Dark Thirty’s Greg Fraser on board as Director of Photography and  Neil Lamont and Doug Chiang handling production design.

Edwards said the film would be about warriors without “magical powers” adding that “the absence of the Jedi hangs over the movie”.

A ‘Star Wars’ movie without Jedi? We love that they’re willing to take that kind of risk. Of course it makes sense within the continuity as well and still leaves the possibility for Sith to turn up - possibly even Darth Vader.

The film began with a pitch (making it the first 'Star Wars’ movie to be pitched) from long-time Industrial Light and Magic visual effects supervisor John Knoll who joined Edwards and LucasFilm boss Kathleen Kennedy on stage.

'Star Wars: Rogue One’ is officially being described as an “anthology” film rather than a spin-off, which is how future ones will also be described.

The next anthology feature will be directed by Josh Trank, who was scheduled to appear but who pulled out due to illness.

'Star Wars: Rogue One’ is set for release on 16 December 2016.
