Star Wars Spin-Off Eyes Female Lead

Almost nothing is known about the upcoming ‘Star Wars’ spin-off, but it looks as though director Gareth Edwards is courting a female lead.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, two young actresses are already testing for the lead role in the first ever ‘Star Wars’ spin-off movie… and they’re names you may recognise.

“Tatiana Maslany, the Canadian actress who stars as multiple replicants in BBC America’s hit series Orphan Black, is testing for the female lead in the Star Wars spinoff,” they revealed.

“Rooney Mara, who starred in the David Fincher version of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, is also due to test this week among a handful of others.”

And that’s not all – it looks as though another familiar face is also being considered.

“Felicity Jones, who just received an Oscar nomination for best actress for her work in The Theory of Everything, is said to be on the want list, although there may be scheduling issues with Inferno, the Da Vinci Code sequel that Ron Howard is due to direct this spring and summer.”

Of course, nothing is yet known about the character they might be playing. In fact, nothing is known for certain about the entire movie. All we know so far is that the script was written by Gary Whitta and was turned in just before Christmas at the same time Whitta exited the film.

Directed by Gareth Edwards, we’ve heard plenty of rumours that the first spin-off will involve smugglers, bounty hunters and may even focus on a young Han Solo. But so far, Disney and Lucasfilm are yet to confirm any details.

“Insiders say that reading and testing for the movie occurred in the U.K. in December and has now moved stateside.”

But when will we find out more about the highly-anticipated project? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but with the script turned in and production expected to begin sometime this year, it won’t be long before we get our first glimpse.

The first ‘Star Wars’ spin-off heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
