Star Wars Spin-Off Gets A New Writer

After Gary Whitta recently exited the ‘Star Wars’ spin-off, it looks as though it’s found a new writer – none other than Chris Weitz.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, ‘Cinderella’ writer Chris Weitz has been brought in to tackle the first spin-off in the galaxy far, far away.

“The Star Wars stand-alone movie that Gareth Edwards will direct has found a new writer,” they revealed. “Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the latest scribe headed to a galaxy far, far away is Chris Weitz, whose credits include the 2002 film About A Boy and Disney’s upcoming Cinderella.”

Of course, it was previously rumoured that creative consultant Simon Kinberg would take over from Gary Whitta after the writer submitted the first draft of the ‘Star Wars’ spin-off. But it looks as though that’s not the case.

But what does Chris Weitz bring to the table?

He’s perhaps best known as a writer and director, having worked with his brother Paul Weitz on the adaptation, ‘About a Boy’. But more importantly, he also wrote the screenplay for the upcoming live-action ‘Cinderella’… which is probably what brought him to the attention of Disney and Lucasfilm.

Unfortunately, we’re still in the dark when it comes to the ‘Star Wars’ spin-off plot… and while casting is reportedly underway, it’s given us little clues when it comes to the film itself.

Of course, that hasn’t stopped the rumours, which seem to suggest that the plot focusses on a group of bounty hunters and an epic heist – possibly to acquire the plans for the Death Star in a daring raid, just before the first ‘Star Wars’ film.

But that remains to be seen.

Will the first ‘Star Wars’ spin-off be any good? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but with Gary Whitta and Chris Weitz on the screenplay, I have a good feeling about this.

The first ‘Star Wars’ spin-off heads to cinemas on 16 December 2016.
