Star Wars Stories May Span Multiple Genres

It’s no secret that Disney has big plans for the ‘Star Wars’ franchise… and it sounds as though Lucasfilm is open to some very different styles of storytelling. But will we see our first ‘Star Wars’ comedy?

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Lucasfilm executive Kiri Hart explained the ambitious plans behind expanding the galaxy far, far away.

“I think there are boundaries [to what defines Star Wars],” she said. “But we don’t want to rigidly define them. It’s obviously not slapstick comedy, but there’s room for many different stories and genres that still feel like Star Wars.”

Of course, this doesn’t necessarily apply to just the films – Disney has already made it very clear that they intend to maximise on their investment, pushing through new animated series ‘Star Wars Rebels’ as well as handing comic book rights over to Marvel Entertainment.

But while there’s more to ‘Star Wars’ than just the movies, there’s one very obvious comparison to be made – the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Has Disney pushed to create an expanded ‘Star Wars’ cinematic universe that will span genres and styles in the same way that Marvel does?

It’s certainly possible. After all, Hart explained that she’s been responsible for “sitting down with filmmakers and writers, talking with them about what they love about Star Wars, and playing matchmaker.” But I really feel there’s more to it than that.

“We say, ‘Let us give you some narrative space to play around in,’” she explained. And it seems this is her approach to creating new material with third parties to fit within the ‘Star Wars’ canon. “Comics from Marvel, for instance, will take place right after the original film and before its sequel, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’.”

Unfortunately, it looks as though we’ll have to wait until some of the new ‘Star Wars’ movies are released to find out how they fit together… and whether or not they stick to one, cohesive style or swap and change depending on the film.

Of course, with various spin-offs in the works, there’s always potential to expand the brand into uncharted territories. But will we ever see a ‘Star Wars’ comedy? I wouldn’t count on it.
