Suicide Squad: Jared Leto Will Play The Joker, Will Smith and Tom Hardy Also Confirmed

It’s official – Jared Leto, Will Smith and Tom Hardy have all joined ‘Suicide Squad’… with a number of other big names rounding off the all-star cast.

Announced by Warner Bros. it was revealed that Jared Leto, Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne will star as the members of DC’s Suicide Squad in the upcoming villainous tentpole. But who will they be playing?

Thankfully, this was also revealed… and it looks as though recent rumours have proved to be true, placing Jared Leto as Batman’s infamous nemesis, The Joker.

The official casting list is as follows:

Jared Leto – The Joker
Will Smith – Deadshot
Tom Hardy – Rick Flag
Margot Robbie – Harley Quinn
Jai Courtney – Boomerang
Cara Delevingne – Enchantress

Of course, all of these names have been attached to the project for some time… but while many assumed that Margot Robbie and Cara Delevingne were both up for the role of Harley Quinn, it looks as though there’s room for the two DC villainesses.

‘Suicide Squad’ will be directed by David Ayer and will begin filming next April.

But what about those rumours of an appearance by Lex Luthor?

“According to insiders, Jesse Eisenberg is also in talks to play Lex Luthor in the film, a role he will first play in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’,” said Variety. “Though the status of his deal is unknown.”

Of course, with DC seeking to establish a wider cinematic universe, I can’t help thinking that Eisenberg’s deal for ‘Suicide Squad’ is inevitable. After all, they’ll most certainly want to see Superman’s most iconic villain alongside the likes of The Joker. And it would certainly help to tie the Suicide Squad into the events of ‘Batman V Superman’.

“The Warner Bros. roots are deep on this one,” said Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman. “We look forward to seeing this terrific ensemble, under David Ayer’s amazing guidance, give new meaning to what it means to be a villain and what it means to be a hero.”

But it looks as though casting is far from over, as Suicide Squad director Amanda Waller is yet to be found.

“The studio’s shortlist of actresses being eyed for the role includes Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer and Oprah Winfrey, whom sources say would be WB’s first choice for the part.”

But will we see Oprah Winfrey in her first ever comic book movie? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but I can’t help thinking this casting choice is absolutely inspired.

‘Suicide Squad’ heads to cinemas on 4 August 2016.
