Suicide Squad Looking For Rick Flagg Replacement

After Tom Hardy quit ‘Suicide Squad’, it looks as though they’re yet to find a replacement… but who will take the role of Rick Flagg Jr?

According to the folks Cinema Blend, the upcoming DC super villain movie is considering two new contenders - Jon Bernthal and Joel Edgerton.

“A source with knowledge of the project has told us that ‘Suicide Squad’ is now looking at Joel Edgerton and Jon Bernthal for the role of Rick Flag,” they revealed. “Bernthal’s name actually was floated for a possible role in the ensemble feature in November, so it’s possible that director David Ayer has just continued to lobby for him.”

Obviously, Jon Bernthal is no stranger to writer and director David Ayer. After all, they worked together on Ayer’s WWII epic ‘Fury’… and perhaps this close-knit experience as one of Brad Pitt’s fellow tank drivers is exactly the reason why Bernthal would work well in the Suicide Squad.

As for Joel Edgerton, that’s a slightly different story…

Recently appearing as the main antagonist in Ridley Scott’s ‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’, Edgerton is obviously used to playing the more morally dubious characters. But it’s his link to former Rick Flagg, Tom hardy that’s the most interesting. That’s right – Edgerton has previously played Hardy’s brother in the fighting drama ‘Warrior’.

Does that make him the perfect replacement for Hardy himself?

To be honest, both actors make a lot of sense in the role. After all, Rick Flagg Jr. has been reported to be more of a supporting role than anything else. Both of these actors have shown they have the acting prowess to work their magic without pulling too much attention away from the main characters – in this case, Will Smith, Margot Robbie and Jared Leto.

But will either of them land the role? For now, we’ll have to wait and see… but with a 2016 release date, surely WB will have to pin this down sooner rather than later.

‘Suicide Squad’ heads to cinemas on 5 August 2016.
