Suicide Squad: More Dark Knight Than The Avengers?

It looks as though ‘Suicide Squad’ will follow DC’s darker, grittier comic book movie tone, as Margot Robbie suggests it has more in common with ‘The Dark Knight’.

It’s no secret that DC and Marvel have very different approaches when it comes to the big screen. Although Warner Bros. has seen success with a darker, grittier kind of hero, Marvel has managed to find an interesting balance between light-hearted fun and all-out action. But which approach will ‘Suicide Squad’ take?

It looks as though it will probably follow the same pattern as ever other DC movie…

During an interview with MTV News, the 24-year-old Australian actress suggested a darker tone for the upcoming ‘Suicide Squad’ movie.

“I think on a scale of like, ‘Dark Knight’ is here and ‘Avengers’ is here, I think it’s more on the ‘Dark Knight’ side of things,” she explained. Of course, Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight’ is considered one of the pinnacles of the darker side of comic book movies… and it seems that David Ayer may be taking some inspiration here.

Although it’s not exactly a huge surprise, it’s interesting that ‘Suicide Squad’ won’t be attempting to break the mould – especially considering the altogether quirkier nature of the team.

Still, with rumours that Harley Quinn may appear elsewhere in DC’s slate, perhaps this is a good thing.

Meanwhile, Robbie also discussed how she landed the role of Harley Quinn… and it seems she didn’t even have to audition.

“I actually got offered this [role],” she said. “I didn’t audition, which is a real step up as an actor when you can get offered things.” And it seems that the creative team already had her and Will Smith in mind, as she reveals: “We didn’t have to do chemistry reads or anything like that, and then I already knew, vaguely knew Jared Leto, who’s playing the Joker.”

It certainly sounds as though Warner Bros. had a distinct group of actors already in mind for the Suicide Squad… and Margot Robbie seems pleased to be among them. But will they get the chemistry right on screen?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
