Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie has just added America Ferrera to its ranks.

Deadline has reported that the Superstore star will join protagonist and co-producer Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, set to play Barbie and Ken in the upcoming film on the Mattel doll line.

Ferrera's role is being kept under wraps, with no additional details as to who she will portray.

Little Women and Lady Bird's Gerwig will helm the project. The director also co-wrote the script with her partner and frequent collaborator, filmmaker Noah Baumbach.

The film hasn't shared an official synopsis yet. Given Gerwig's previous work (both behind and in front of the camera), however, it is safe to say her Barbie will defy expectations.

Robbie will also be producing the picture with her LuckyChap Entertainment, a company that has backed projects of the likes of Emerald Fennell's Oscar-nominated film Promising Young Woman.

Last year, the Australian actress teased her Barbie film, confirming it won't be your typical doll story.

"It comes with a lot of baggage! And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that come a lot of exciting ways to attack it.

"People generally hear 'Barbie' and think, 'I know what that movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't...'" she added.

Production for the movie is set to start soon in London. The film doesn't have an official release date as of yet, but it is slated to debut in cinemas at some point in 2023.
