The Best Reviewed Director Of The Last Decade May Surprise You
Who is the best director of the last 10 years? Could it be Steven Spielberg? What about James Cameron? Or how about that young upstart Chris Nolan?
Well, according to a statistical analysis of every movie released by Hollywood’s top directors over the last decade, the answer is actually Ben Affleck.

Yes, that’s right. The future Batman, once the whipping boy of the tabloid press, has the best batting average amongst Hollywood’s biggest name directors when it comes to review scores.

Entertainment blog The Roosevelts mined data from review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes to perform the analysis. They compared the site’s unique Tomatometer ratings for every film helmed by big directors in the last 10 years, then calculated their average review scores.
Ben Affleck’s three directorial efforts, ‘Gone Baby Gone’, ‘The Town’, and ‘Argo’ earned him a 94.67% average of positive reviews, putting him head and sholuders above his nearest rival David Fincher whose average is 86.2%. He also ranked above Martin Scorsese, Chris Nolan, and Steven Spielberg in the top ten list which doesn’t feature any female directors.
You could argue that Affleck’s sample size is too small to draw such conclusions from, but then you’d be a total spoilsport.
Affleck’s political thriller ‘Argo’ won the Best Picture Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards in 2013 with ‘Gone Baby Gone’ and ‘The Town’ also earning rave reviews upon release.
His next directorial effort is set to be prohibition-era gangster thriller ‘Live By Night’ which is scheduled for release in 2016. He’ll also be in front of the camera for the adaptation of the Dennis Lehane novel, alongside Elle Fanning, Zoe Saldana, and Sienna Miller.
Before all that though, he’s got to finish shooting ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’. Who’s a busy boy then?
