The best movies to stream on Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is looming and streaming services have laid on plenty of romantic options to get viewers in the right mood.

From new romantic comedies to epic love stories, there is something on offer for everyone.

We round up a few of the highlights for February 14.

Pretty Woman

Viewers can’t go wrong with this 1990 classic starring Julia Roberts as prostitute Vivian, who is swept off her feet by billionaire Edward (Richard Gere).

The pair couldn’t come from more different worlds.

But Vivian’s energetic spirit challenges Edward’s no-nonsense approach to life, and soon they are teaching each other – and falling in love.

Bridesmaids

If a Galentine’s Day is more your speed, look no further than Bridesmaids.

The 2011 film follows unemployed Annie (Kristen Wiig), who suffers a series of misfortunes after being asked to be her best friend’s Maid of Honour when she gets engaged.

It was a roaring success when it was released more than a decade ago and scooped a raft of accolades, including a Critics' Choice Award for best comedy.

The Bodyguard

Now is also throwing it back to 1992 with romantic classic The Bodyguard.

The film stars Kevin Costner as a bodyguard hired to protect a singer (played by the late Whitney Houston) after she starts getting death threats.

It was nominated for an embarrassing seven Golden Raspberry Awards – which ‘honour’ the worst of cinema - but it was also one of the highest-grossing movies of 1992 and has gone on to become a cult classic.

Love, Victor

Both seasons of this coming of age/coming out comedy drama are available on Disney+.

The show follows Victor, a new student at Creekwood High School, on his journey of self-discovery.

Among other things, he faces challenges at home and grapples with his sexual orientation.

The programme started in 2020 and made a huge splash, becoming one of the most-binged original drama series on Hulu.

27 Dresses

Former Grey's Anatomy star Katherine Heigl lights up the screen in this charming 2008 romantic comedy about a woman who has been a helpful bridesmaid no less than 27 times.

Her own fairy-tale wedding seems to be nowhere in sight, until her younger sister Tess captures the heart of Jane’s boss - inspiring Jane to do something to change her destiny.

The film also stars James Marsden.

Long Story Short

This Australian rom-com follows Teddy (Rafe Spall), who wakes up the morning after his wedding to discover that he is jumping forward to the next year of his life every few minutes.

Watching his future flash before his eyes, he must make every second count if he is going to win back the woman of his dreams.

Long Story Short also stars Zahra Newman, Ronnie Chieng and Josh Lawson.
