The Crow Reboot To Shoot At New Pinewood Studio In Cardiff

Good news for both the UK film industry, and fans of ‘The Crow’ who’ve been growing ever more impatient waiting for the long-promised reboot to get into action: it has been announced that the new version of ‘The Crow’ will shoot at the new Pinewood Studios facility in Cardiff.

First Minister Carwyn Jones made the announcement earlier today, and Pinewood have said they expect the production to commence very soon.

‘The Crow,’ a new take on the Gothic comic book first brought to the screen in 1994, will in fact be the very first feature film shot at the studio, and while it’s an American production from Relativity Studios, it does look to be a largely British affair on many levels.

Calling the shots is British filmmaker Corin Hardy (director of upcoming horror movie ‘The Hallow’), and the lead role of Eric Draven - an undead avenger who returns from the grave to avenge the murder of himself and his fiance, played by the late Brandon Lee in the original - is all but confirmed to be filled by ‘Boardwalk Empire’ actor Jack Huston, who is also British.

‘The Crow’s creator James O’Barr has also recently claimed that the role of the fiance Shelley will be taken by another Brit, ‘Downton Abbey’ actress Jessica Brown Findlay - and he also hints that British actors, potentially including an unnamed ‘Game of Thrones’ star, will mostly fill out the cast.

That said, O’Barr also claimed the film - which he prefers to call a ‘reimagining’ - was set to shoot in Belgium, which today’s news of course proves wrong.

Cardiff has become a popular spot for TV and film production of late, a fact which First Minister Jones takes entirely reasonable pride in:

“Provisional figures show we have broken the record for the number of foreign investment projects attracted to Wales last year and Pinewood is to become our 50th anchor company.

"Fifty thousand people now work in the creative industries in Wales and that success shows we have the talent, resources and skills to support the best productions in the world.

"Pinewood are committed to this building to shoot films in the future. Where we can create a cluster of expertise will attract more and more businesses in that area of expertise, that’s how Hollywood started.

"Ten years ago this would never have happened. It’s a sign we’re going out and selling Wales. The country is getting a good reputation as a place where these skills are being used and a place for businesses in the creative industry."

There does seem to be a certain irony, then, that the lead role in ‘The Crow’ will no longer be played by increasingly successful Welsh actor Luke Evans, who had been attached for over two years before having to move on in favour of other opportunities.

Also set to shoot at the new Cardiff studio is ‘The Bastard Executioner,’ the FX TV series from ‘Sons of Anarchy’ creator Kurt Sutter (pictured above with Jones and producer Paris Barclay).
