The Crow Reboot To Star Andrea Riseborough As Villain

The upcoming reboot of ‘The Crow,’ set to see ‘Boardwalk Empire’ actor Jack Huston take the lead as undead avenger Eric Draven, would appear to be taking a new spin on the source material by changing the gender of a key bad guy.

Deadline reports that English actress Andrea Riseborough (most recently seen in ‘Birdman,’ ‘Oblivion’ and ‘Welcome to the Punch’) is in talks to appear in director Corin Hardy’s film as Top Dollar, the central villain of the original 1994 film.

Michael Wincott memorably took the role opposite the late Brandon Lee in the film from director Alex Proyas, although this take on the character - a somewhat theatrical criminal overlord, who lived above a Gothic nightclub - was quite far removed from the more basic street-level criminal of James O’Barr’s original comic book.

Quite how this new take on the character will measure up to either of those is unclear at this point, although all previous word on the matter has emphasised that this new film - reportedly written for the screen by Claire Wilson - will veer far closer to the comic than the 1994 film or its sequels did. To aid in this, O’Barr himself is officially involved in the new film as a creative consultant.

If Riseborough does indeed sign on, she will be the third confirmed cast member along with Huston and Jessica Brown-Findlay (soon to be seen opposite Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy in ‘Victor Frankenstein'), who takes the role of Eric’s lost love Shelley.

This makes ‘The Crow’ a very British film, with the director and entire cast thus far originating from the UK, and the film itself set to shoot at the new Pinewood Studios facility in Cardiff.

Original ‘The Crow’ producer Edward R Pressman is again producing the film for Relativity Media, along with Kevin Misher, Ryan Kavanaugh, Jeff Waxman. Tucker Tooley, and Harvey and Bob Weinstein.

No release date is set, but ‘The Crow’ reboot is anticipated to hit screens sometime in 2016.
