The Good Dinosaur: Pixar's Most Troubled Production Yet?

Actor John Lithgow has spoken of the drastic changes that’ve been made to the script of Disney Pixar’s upcoming movie ‘The Good Dinosaur’ in a recent interview with Collider

But this isn’t the first or sole bump in the road for the animation giant, who have already replaced its original director and had the cinema release date significantly pushed back.

Around a year ago, Ed Catmull revealed that its director, Bob Peterson, was to be replaced, but the reasons were rather vague. The official statement read:

“All directors get really deep in their films. Sometimes you just need a different perspective to get the idea out. Sometimes directors… are so deeply embedded in their ideas it actually takes someone else to finish it up. I would go so far as to argue that a lot of live-action films would be better off with that same process.”

Not only that, but the original, US-penned May 2014 release was put back until until November of next year, in order to make way for more immediate projects like ‘Inside Out’, which also allowed ‘The Good Dinosaur’ to find its feet again.

Its alleged first poster was leaked online, too, even though Pixar came out to deny it was the official artwork for the film. Even so, it still proved somewhat of a marketing hiccup.

But now Lithgow has revealed that having already done the entirety of his voice work for the movie, the studio have since significantly jiggled with the script and the dialogue.

"I recorded the entire role in Good Dinosaur. They have now dismantled it and completely reimagined it, and it is a fantastic new story. So I’m gonna record again on it within the next month. Don’t worry. It’s coming and it’s gonna be better than I ever imagined."

After Peterson was unceremoniously removed, there was a concern that the project could become another ‘Newt’ (Pixar’s only cancelled feature, whereby ‘Brave’ took precedent instead).

There’s no doubt that ‘The Good Dinosaur has had a perilous journey during its conception and production, but fans shouldn’t feel overly concerned, with the film firmly on course for Winter 2015.

'The Good Dinosaur' will be released in cinemas in the US on 25 November 2015, and on 4 December here in the UK.
